In a nutshell

The project restored the Isar’s river dynamics and floodplains, reviving banks, side-channels, wetlands, and near-natural alluvial forests. By rebuilding habitat structure, it boosted freshwater fish populations and reopened the river landscape for people and recreation, proving that water management and nature conservation can jointly deliver the Water Framework Directive and Natura 2000 goals.

Why it mattered

Decades of channelisation had simplified the Isar. The LIFE team reintroduced natural processes, gravel dynamics, side arms, shallow zones, and safeguarded dry floodplain habitats, showing that integrated restoration strengthens biodiversity, flood resilience, and local quality of life.

What was different
