In a nutshell
LIFE Moonset designs, pilots and evaluates on-demand passenger-pooling shuttles for sectors with very early/late shifts (e.g., tram/bus/metro crews, infrastructure, industry). By combining smart pooling algorithms with behaviour change, the project targets modal shift from private cars, lower GHG emissions, and less parking demand, filling a gap regular public transport can’t cover at night.
What’s different
- Unique use case: purpose-built for nighttime mobility, often ignored in standard PT planning.
- Integrated model: tech deployment + behaviour change delivered by a reliable, motivated consortium.
- User-centred pilots: co-designed with employers and cities to meet real shift patterns.
“Our goal is simple: make it possible to work night shifts without owning a car.” – Vincent Neumayer
Early wins & expected impact
- GHG reduction from pooled rides replacing solo car trips.
- Modal shift ↑ to shared shuttles, measured by the routing/pooling algorithm.
- Parking need ↓ near depots and worksites, freeing urban space.
How it works
- On-demand pooling platform matches riders by origin, timing and shift start/end.
- Operations playbook covers procurement, service design, employer onboarding, and comms.
- KPIs tracked in-app: GHG per passenger-km, share of trips shifted from cars, parking offsets.
Risks & how we manage them
- Procurement delays / cost eligibility: early planning, tight documentation.
- Too much demand for pilots: clear service caps and transparent user communication.
Built to spread
- WP7 Replication: tools, templates and hands-on support to copy the model in similar contexts across Europe.
- After-LIFE: mixed internal/external funding to keep services running; replication offers for cities, employers and operators.
Policy & market signal
Night-shift company shuttles can become a flagship measure in company mobility management. Evidence from pilots will inform startup subsidies and employer uptake where gaps exist.
Tips for future LIFE proposers
Pick a motivated, complementary consortium; be honest about strengths/weaknesses; bring in external expertise where needed—and design measurable, realistic results from day one.
LIFE success
A pragmatic blend of tech and teamwork, cleaner, safer, fairer night mobility for the people who keep our cities running while most of us sleep.
